Top RPG games – now dirt cheap

If RPGs are your flavor there is an abundance of expensive headline stealing games out there, many of them with eye-watering budgets and top tier talent attached. But this kind of ball hogging makes it easy to overlook the leaner entries.

Low-cost titles can often outshine the top dogs based on value alone. Either through replayability, magnetic gameplay, or offbeat narrative innovation, you could be bowled over by a fully-fledged masterpiece at half the usual triple AAA price.

If you can’t be without the mainstream RPG titles we also know that shrewd gamers can find those top tier games at a fraction of the price in some places, so we’ve added an extra section for those below.

We’ll start with some excellent value RPGs you may have missed;

Dread Nautical (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox)

Fishing for attention first on the mobile scene, this turn-based RPG can now be found on most platforms at a mid-tier price. A light-hearted art style keeps things bubbling along as you work to overcome the creepy nasties that have laid claim to this unsettling cruise liner.
Longevity & Value: 20 decks/levels to explore, deck bosses can offer special runes that can be used to unlock secret areas – adding to length exploration.
Metacritic Score: 73%
Gamer Savings: 30% off in regular digital store sales, 19.99 standard price.

The Council (PS4, Xbox, PC)

There’s a rich narrative interwoven with puzzle-solving and some cool twists and turns to keep you interested. A good find for the cost.
Longevity & Value: This is an episodic game so you will find more value in picking up the complete season edition.
Metacritic Score: 73%
Gamer Savings: 5.99 in PSN a sale ending July 2020. 19.99 standard price. Wait for the sale to come back.

Moonlighter: Complete Edition (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox)

Purchase the complete edition and you’ll get all updates and the expansion. This is the new kid on the block in the world of dungeon crawling rogue-lites. Explore different dimensions, upgrade your weapons and fight bosses until your heart is content. There is a worthy amount of content here to justify your purchase.
Longevity & Value: Procedurally generated dungeons will keep you returning, if not to explore, then to seek new weapons and armor.
Metacritic Score:  89%
Gamer Savings: Regular sale on Steam, or you could get up to 18% off with a top-up card on most digital storefronts.

GamerSavings Tip – Use a discounted top-up card if buying digital versions as this will give you another discount, typically 13-18%

The Escapists 2 – Game of the Year Edition (PC, PS4, Xbox)

There’s nothing funny about prison life, until now! This fun sandbox simulation RPG puts you in control and sits back and watches as you become drunk with power and ultimately run the place into ruin. Even if your intentions are good they won’t stand a chance against your propensity for chaos.
Longevity & Value: The game of the year edition offers all the base content and all add on and DLC.
Metacritic Score:  89%
Gamer Savings: 60% off on recurring digital sales.

Dragon Age: Inquisition (PC, PS4, Xbox)

The gaming world moves so fast that you could consider this an old-timer, but you can’t deny the considerable value on offer here. A massive sprawling world, multiple characters at your command all maintained with unique and upgradable customization systems and a map size that begs for far more time than the story covers. This game is why people are already excited about the next installment.
Longevity & Value: 20-30hr campaign, 150-200hrs of content. No new game+ mode but enough main story content to make it last.
Metacritic Score: 85%
Gamer Savings: Currently 70% off in most stores, some offer even more discount than this.

Operencia: The Stolen Sun (PS4, PC, Switch)

Familiar territory for some, brand new for others, this turn-based RPG tries to take first-person dungeon crawling to a new level and offers plenty of new historical trappings along the way. A charming art style keeps things fresh but the real reason you’ll keep coming back will be collectibles and the ongoing discovery.
Longevity & Value: 19hr campaign but lots of extra content.
Metacritic Score: 81%
Gamer Savings: 70% off, most stores.

Blasphemous (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox)

You won’t finish this game easily, if at all. Ever. Lots of value can be found in the fact that this game has tons of charm and some rewards for a second playthrough. The religious undertones lend to a deep and unfamiliar story. Rewarding gameplay justifies its tough difficulty so this is easy to recommend, but that’s where the easy stuff ends.
Longevity & Value: 15hrs to complete, approx 23 hours to find and collect everything.
Metacritic Score: 78%
Gamer Savings: Regularly at 70% off, most digital store sales.

Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark (PC, PS4, Xbox, Switch)

Final Fantasy tactics fans have much to enjoy in this turn-based tactics game. Offering real homage to the genre and new elements to the settings this is a new chance to get yourself addicted all over again. Deep customization options and a massive story with plenty of end game content will earn its right to live on your shelf.
Longevity & Value: 50+hrs of content
Metacritic Score: 89%
Gamer Savings: 70% off, most stores

Minecraft Dungeons (PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox)

The mega brand branches out and delves further into the dark. Fans of Diablo will feel right at home here and everyone else will benefit from its simple pick up and play mechanics. The lower cost speaks nothing to the huge amount of playtime as this has built-in rewards for replay and loot searching. The familiar Minecraft aesthetic blends well with an old but tried and tested playstyle. People will be playing this for years to come.
Longevity & Value: A short 5 hour campaign but 21hrs for every achievement.
Metacritic Score: 73%
Gamer Savings: Only a few sales, wait until you see a price drop.

Top RPG games that are now low cost
Armed with nothing more than a savvy disposition, I’ll wager someone could outfit an entire game collection for less than the cost of a few triple-A titles. Options like this are invaluable, but what about value in the triple-a space?

We know the headliners don’t stay expensive forever so how about a quick mention of some of the best RPGs you can snag for at least half the cost of it’s initial RRP or lower.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Available at a super low price across different platforms (typically around 70% off) this masterclass of world-building and storytelling speaks for itself. Also, the game of the year edition bundles in two highly acclaimed pieces of story content, both of which apparently improve on an already satisfying story conclusion.

Skyrim
This one goes way back but you can pick it up for pennies in most places now. There has been some polish added to it later editions but the real allure here would be the amount of gameplay to dollar content.

AC Origins
My favorite of all the AC games and still possibly the most refined, this is the one set in ancient Egypt. If you don’t get your moneys worth in the game then go through its interactive history museum and learn stuff about mummies. Done.

Fallout 4
The new building features and tools add to wide-open world and fun gunslinging. Not the most sleek looking game now but certainly way more content than you pay for, especially if you get the complete edition.

If they are not on sale you may want to add these games to your wish list and wait since they can briefly jump back to full price but generally you’ll pick these up for far less than they are worth.

Hopefully you’ve found some ideas to get you started. Let us know if you find some real bargains.
